    Sounds like the application of brake fluid had varying results, depending on the platen itself and its condition.

    One of these days I need to find a sort of "junker" typewriter on which to conduct my attempts at disassembling and reassembling. I'm way too hesitant to mess with my working machines at this early stage.

  2. hmm goes to show... either the difference is in the age, or in the quality/density of the rubber. Maybe a purer or more organic-rubbery platen takes more of the brake fluid and softens up... But thoses Hermes do have very hard platens.
