Keep in mind that back in the day one could get stencil-cutting platens made of *brass*. You aren't going to damage or break the typebars unless you're hitting the keys abusively hard. If you double-sheet the pages you feed in, that should sufficiently soften the impact so as to be virtually identical to new rubber.
