I know how you feel. There has been little on Craigslist around here. Ted found that cool Webster and there is a nice SG-1 for $35, but I already have an SG-1 and two would be a little crazy. Ebay had a very nice mint Royal HH, but the seller was in WA and only had $25 for shipping. I know HHs and they would cost a little more than $25 to ship down the road. It did go for a song; $50.
You should live where I live. A few years ago I bought some typewriters on Craigslist. Since then N O T H I N G local save for a few wedges or electrics.
Even here in Switzerland, typewriter supply seems to have dried out lately. I think the only machine I bought this summer (since June or so) are an Erika and an antares, but maybe that's also because I've already got a number of machines, so there aren't as many "new" ones to add to the collection...
It's fun when you know other collectors in town, I suppose that I sort of snatched that Webster out from under Ryan's nose, since the seller was closer to him than to me. However, had I not grabbed it, I'm certain Ryan would have eventually got it, and that relieves a lot of the pressure I used to feel about "having to have" every good machine I saw. (or Mr. Beach might have found it, or any of the perhaps a dozen or so people who've shown up at the Phoenix Type-ins.) I don't feel like I have to rescue machines to keep them out of landfills anymore. (:
That said, I have noticed a drop in frequency of typewriter sightings lately, accompanied by a rise in the desirability of what I'm seeing (and a significant rise in sticker price). I don't know if that is a direct result of more players in the market or if it's just fewer typewriters in the market.
